Understanding it

Planning ahead, with the facts

Although the best time for a woman to conceive is in her twenties, many women are now career oriented and understandably not willing to start a family early. Both partners should therefore be counselled thoroughly about the advantages and the disadvantages of timely and of delayed pregnancy.

The biology is straightforward. With age, the quality of the eggs in a woman’s body declines, which makes it harder to become pregnant in the late thirties and afterwards, and in some cases impossible. Knowing that early is what makes planning possible at all.

It becomes necessary for both the woman and her partner to plan ahead of time about starting a family. That conversation covers what you want, when you want it, and what to do in the meantime, which is where contraception fits in.

Counselling is not a push in either direction. It is the information you need to make your own decision, including the option of fertility assessment if you intend to delay and want to know where you stand.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

The questions patients ask most often, answered plainly.

When is the best time to conceive?

Biologically a woman’s twenties, though for most people the decision balances career, circumstances and health. Counselling is about weighing those honestly.

Does age really affect fertility that much?

Yes. Egg quality declines with age, which makes conception progressively harder from the late thirties onward, and in some cases impossible.

What contraception options are there?

Several, from short acting to long acting reversible methods. Which suits you depends on your health, your plans and how you live.

Should my partner come along?

Yes. Family planning involves both partners, and much of what is covered applies equally to both.

Can I check my fertility before trying?

Yes. Baseline hormone testing and an ultrasound give a reasonable picture of where you stand, which is useful if you plan to delay.

Is counselling only for couples planning pregnancy?

No. It equally covers contraception and spacing for couples who want to avoid or postpone pregnancy.
