Understanding it

How laparoscopy differs from open surgery

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique in which surgery is performed by making small incisions in the abdomen, used to insert a tiny camera along with fine devices and instruments. The images from the camera are projected onto a large screen, which helps the surgeon guide the camera and instruments through the region and view the organs up close.

This differs from traditional open surgery, which requires large, deep incisions. The smaller access means less tissue disruption, less pain afterwards, a shorter hospital stay, and a quicker return to normal activity.

In some cases the procedure is diagnostic. The surgeon takes tissue samples to send for examination in the laboratory, which can settle a diagnosis that scans alone could not. In other cases the same cameras, devices and instruments are used to carry out the operation itself.

In gynaecology it is used across a wide range of conditions, including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, adhesions, tubal assessment as part of fertility investigation, and hysterectomy where the case allows it.

What it covers

What laparoscopy is used for

Seen and managed by your consultant, not handed to a junior.

Small incisions

Access through a few small cuts rather than one large one, which is what drives the faster recovery.

Camera guided view

Images projected onto a large screen let the surgeon see the organs up close and work precisely.

Diagnostic biopsy

Tissue samples taken during the procedure and sent to the laboratory to settle a diagnosis.

Operative laparoscopy

The same instruments used to carry out the operation, not just to look at the problem.

Faster recovery

Less tissue disruption means less pain, a shorter stay, and a quicker return to normal life.

Gynaecological uses

Endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, adhesions, tubal assessment and hysterectomy.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

The questions patients ask most often, answered plainly.

Is laparoscopy major surgery?

It is real surgery under anaesthetic, but the access is far smaller than open surgery, which is why recovery is quicker and the stay shorter.

How long is the recovery?

It depends on what was done. Diagnostic laparoscopy usually means days rather than weeks. Operative procedures take longer, and we will give you a realistic timeline.

Will I have scars?

Small ones, at the incision sites. They are considerably smaller than the single long scar left by open surgery.

What conditions can be treated this way?

Endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, adhesions, tubal problems, and hysterectomy where the case allows it.

Is it done under general anaesthetic?

Usually yes. This is discussed with you and with the anaesthetist before the procedure.

When is open surgery needed instead?

Where the anatomy, the size of the problem or previous surgery makes keyhole access unsafe. That assessment is made before, not during.
