Understanding it

What counselling covers, before and after birth

Prenatal counselling is the part of antenatal care that is about conversation rather than measurement. It covers what to expect in each trimester, what is normal and what is not, what to eat, how much to move, which symptoms warrant a phone call, and how to prepare practically for delivery day.

Birth planning is a large part of it. Your options are discussed early rather than in the middle of labour, so you understand what a vaginal birth and a caesarean each involve, what pain relief is available, and what happens if the plan needs to change. An informed patient is a calmer one.

Postnatal counselling picks up where the delivery room ends. The fourth trimester, the six to eight weeks after birth, brings physical recovery alongside a significant emotional adjustment. We cover feeding and latching, sleep, wound and perineal care, contraception, and when it is safe to resume normal activity.

Emotional health is part of the same conversation. Low mood, anxiety and exhaustion after birth are common and treatable, and they are far easier to manage when someone asks about them directly instead of waiting for you to raise it.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

The questions patients ask most often, answered plainly.

When should prenatal counselling start?

Ideally in the first trimester, so nutrition, activity and risk factors are addressed early. It continues alongside your routine antenatal visits.

What is discussed in a birth plan?

Your delivery options, pain relief choices, who you want present, and what happens if circumstances change during labour.

Can my partner attend?

Yes, and it is encouraged. Much of what is covered, particularly around delivery and the first weeks at home, applies to both of you.

How long does the postnatal period last?

The postpartum phase lasts around six to eight weeks, though recovery and emotional adjustment can continue beyond that.

Is emotional health part of postnatal care?

Yes. Mood and anxiety are asked about directly at postnatal visits, because they are common after birth and respond well to early support.

Do I need a separate appointment for counselling?

It can be part of a routine antenatal visit, but if you have a lot to cover, book a dedicated slot so nothing gets rushed.
